SABC2 has started production on the local version of a successful international formatted TV Series from Sony entitled Showville.
Everybody dreams of becoming a star and basking in their fifteen minutes of fame. Knowing that every town has a story and every town has a star, Showville makes dreams a reality by bringing all the glitz and glamour of wanna-be stardom to the small, remote and mostly, overlooked towns or ”dorpies” across South Africa.
SHOWVILLE is South Africa’s small town variety talent show. A small-town variety talent competition where two iconic hosts visit a different town each week selecting four finalists whose performances are put to a town vote to decide who walks away with R 10, 000 cash and the glory of newfound fame.
The Series centres on the often overlooked but unforgettable behind-the-scenes moments of small town variety talent shows where wannabe stars reach outside of their comfort zones – sometimes with side-splitting results – to put their unique talent to the test in nail-biting auditions that never fail to entertain.
Hosting the series are two award winning performers: TV star, comedian and record-breaking winner of South Africa’s “Strictly Come Dancing” Series, Rob van Vuuren; along with dancer, choreographer, and star in local dance movie “Hear Me Move”, Bontle Modiselle. They will be spending time with each town’s short listed four finalists, mentoring and coaching them, in preparation for the big show-off talent evening hosted in the Town Hall or local Community Centre and attended by locals who will be expected to vote for their favourite performer on the night. One of the four will be crowned the town’s Showville winner and will walk away with the prize money.
Showville is being produced as a co-production between two of Cape Town’s top TV production companies, Okuhle Media and Cooked in Africa Films.
Okuhle Media Executive Producer, Louise McClelland comments, “We’re looking for unusual quirky acts – jugglers, magicians, uni-cycling clowns, comedians – we’re not excluding singers and dancers – everyone is welcome to audition! We will share the, often magical, real stories behind the talent, reminding ordinary South Africans that there is always something extraordinary around every corner if we care to look for it.”
Says Executive Producer Peter Gird: We as a team have chased this format for more than two years now and the fact that it has become a reality is thrilling for all of us. Talent shows are entrenched into our diverse culture and so we can’t wait to see who will come out to entertain South Africa.
This first series – comprising 26 one hour episodes – will see the Showville crew visiting towns in the Western Cape, Free State and Kwa-Zulu Natal. “We felt it was time to visit places that rarely receive public exposure” commented Greenland. “The Show is intended to roll out as a nationwide talent search with the hope that our second Series for 2016 will see us travelling to Gauteng and up North.”
The Series will be screened on SABC2 each Saturday at 20h00 from 7 November 2015.
